Pop-up Vignettes
NEW FOR 2012! Twelve Pop-up Vignettes will present the latest trends in accent furniture, decorative accessories and lighting - all products from our 2012 exhibitors. These design-inspired podiums, put together and brought to life by lifestyle expert and designer Janette Ewen, were scattered throughout the halls of the Market.
Here's a look at the twelve Pop-Up Vignettes and the design inspirations that were used to create the backdrops:
BACK TO BLACK
Slightly mysterious with touches of masculinity… this look is rich, luxurious, well crafted and very dark. Imagine a 1920’s Park Avenue apartment, with classic lines, full of dark wood, leather, velvet, intricately carved furnishings finished by culturally rich accessories (pen and ink sketches, black marble mantles, ebony sculptures). Black painted walls, ceilings and dark wooden floors complete this look. Not for the faint of heart, Black-to-Black has a timeless appeal and is for those confident in their sense style.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER
Fresh, floating and feminine, this look, taken from the couture runways embodies a spirit of youth and softness. Seen as in print in fabrics, wallpapers and on area rugs the feather motif brings a whimsical touch to the home. Delicate Ostrich plumes adorn accessories from ornamental wreaths to mantle displays, creating a look that allows a space to simply exhale.

FADED CHINOISERIE
Taken from an era that embraced a sense of fun, excitement and wanderlust, faded Chinoiserie is simply a softer version of this now classic style of design. A mixture geometric lattice prints and organic elements (plants, flowers, butterflies, dragons) define this look and are presented in muted pastels with gentle patina. Crystal, gold and mercury glass complement the over all feel of Faded Chinoiserie.

GLITTERATTI
More is more, especially when it comes to the use of metallic, sparkle and shine. Seen mostly in accessories (lighting, tableware, ornate stools and side tables) glitterati is an over the top look reminiscent of Jean Harlow’s wardrobe or 1980’s Euro-trash-inspired apartment. The backdrop to this look is crisp and very white, from pure white walls to white carpets. It’s confident luxury at its best.

HITCHCOCK HEROINE
Controlling, tone on tone, refined, Hitchcock Heroine is a look that reflects the very nature of the man himself and the ice-queen actresses he shaped and molded into the very ideal of contrived perfection. One will not see much colour in the look as it takes a back seat to sublime textures presented in shades of black and brown. Wood grain, enamel, chrome, fur, quartz, tortoiseshell are layered to perfection creating a sense of a life that might just hold a very dark secret.

HYPER REAL
Inspired by a combination of pop art, Japanimation, citrus fruit and 1980’s neon, this bohemian approach to bright is an entirely fresh and modern take on colour. LONDON CALLING
London in the 1960’s mixed with the modern London loft look (think Paul Smith or Jasper Conran) creates the very fun and whimsical London Calling trend. The Union Jack is one of the main motifs of this look and is seen in accessories, artwork and furniture. Mid century modern furnishings (often shown in leather, glass and Lucite) are combined with more traditional British lighting elements and finishing touches.

MODERN MOROCCAN
And even brighter and bolder Moroccan look is taking hold of the design community and has become the backdrop to countless urban restaurants, boutique hotels and nightclubs. Fuchsia, purple, emerald green are mixed with gold and then layered with intricate patterns (in structures, furniture and accessories) to create a look that says confident, global and very, very rich.

ORANGE CRUSH
Bright, juicy and fun orange is the standout colour for 2012. Surprisingly neutral, orange looks right at home in a kitchen, living room, and dining room, even in a child’s bedroom. Orange, when mixed with Scandinavian-style furniture and accessories takes a slightly mid-century modern feel that has a distinct yet timeless feel.

WEST COAST RUSTIC GLAMOUR
Shabby-Chic is back in a big way and it’s brought the beach with it. This look has a slightly Parisian-feel (with splashes of gold and with all the intricate carving details seen in furniture and accessories) however the worn feel of West Coast Rustic Glamour is very distinctly Californian and beachy. The look has a faded by the winds of the ocean feel and features a colour palette of weathered whites, sand and sea-glass blue.
